Letter to the editor

Let’s stand up for peace

(21 February 2023) Many media, politicians, anti-arms activists, anti-militarists, anti-violence activists, Greens, Reds and do-gooders of all colours, but above all an appalling number of women, are currently crying out loudly for more arms and tank deliveries to Ukraine.

From a safe vantage point, those who do not have to put their lives at stake are calling for the continuation of armed violence and are thus beating the drums in support of the war, placing themselves in the ranks of militant warmongers.

Well knowing that no side can ever emerge “victorious” from this unfortunate war. Knowing that only a ceasefire, compromises and negotiations can lead to a viable middle path and a future for all those directly and indirectly involved.

War is always wrong, unjust, inhumane, meaningless. War is not a “game”, not an amateur soccer tournament where you can cheer for one team from the side lines. War is a deadly tournament. Deadly for countless young hopeful men who have to sacrifice their lives involuntarily or return to their equally scarred families, wounded in body and soul.

All of us have only one life we should cherish and protect.

Enough is enough. Stop arms violence. Stop the destruction of lives and resources.

Let’s beat the drums for peace! Now, all of us, loudly!

Let’s stand up for peace.
