(20 September 2024) Viola Amherd is flirting with NATO. She is entitled to her passions. The problem is her status as President of the Swiss Confederation. Head of the army, yes, but above all a national symbol. A country that has made neutrality its raison d'être over the past two centuries.

Putting this commitment into question, just like that, because the centrist minister expresses a whim to please the arms industry, is pure and simple irresponsibility. Even more so since Ms Amherd is doing nothing to dispel rumours of her stepping down at the end of the year. After me the deluge ...

And who is this Katja Gentinetta, whom the Swiss daily “La Liberté” reports she drafted the report calling for a “relaxation” of Switzerland’s neutral policy in the name of an ad hoc expert commission? Nobody seems to be questioning this.
