World Press Freedom Day – Resolution

Release Julian Assange! No extradition to the USA!

Resolution of the IPPNW General Assembly in Hamburg on 30 April 2022

(15 May 2022) “As editor-in-chief of Wikileaks and through the publication of whistleblower information on serious war crimes, Julian Assange has the greatest peace policy significance. Already in 2019, Northern Ireland's Mairead Corrigan nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. This year, further nominations have been added.

In destructive conditions, Julian Assange has been held incommunicado in the UK (at Belmarsh high security prison near London) for years. If he is extradited and charged with ‘conspiracy’ (publishing Pentagon documents), as demanded by the USA and approved by the British Westminster Magistrates Court on 20 April 2022, he would face 175 years in prison. This would also be a severe blow to the peace movement and would have a massive deterrent effect on journalists to make war crimes public – especially as it is unclear whether the charges could be extended after extradition and Assange could face the death penalty.

This extradition must therefore not take place under any circumstances; Assange, who has been ill for some time, must be protected from it with all the means at our disposal. His British lawyer Jennifer Robinson now has three weeks to formulate an objection to this. The German section of IPPNW joins the corresponding efforts of many well-known personalities and organisations in several countries (such as our sister organisation IALANA-Germany) and supports Julian Assange’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. It also asks its International Councillor to bring this to the attention of the Board of Directors.”
